Quintessential Weather for Overnight Canoe Trip

November 19th, 2010

Hello! What a beautiful day today! A sunny 70 degree day with a low only in the mid 40’s! What an awesome time for an overnight canoe trip.  Overnight camping on the river is an awesome way to relax and truly enjoy what nature has to offer.  When’s the last time you actually watched the stars come out? Or just listened to the music of the darkening day? An overnight canoe camping trip is the perfect opportunity to do just that.  Come on out and we’ll drive you and your gear up river to a 15 mile drop off point. You canoe leisurely as many of those miles you’d like once you get on river. Pick a sand bar of your choice to set up camp. Enjoy the sound of the current, the heat from your fire, and the company of  canoe partner. In the light of the morning, continue down Coldwater at your own pace and return to Adventures Unlimited.  If you’ve never experienced the joy of canoeing, plan your trip today!

High Water Today

November 16th, 2010

We finally got some rainfall! With an inch and a half yesterday Coldwater Creek is running in the high yellow. This mean the water level is up, the water is moving more swiftly than normal and we only run kayaks.

Here’s some more facts about our favorite river.  Coldwater Creek winds from north to south through a variety of natural communities including hammock, flatwoods, sandhill, and scrub. The water is clear with a very faint tea-colored tint to it and flows over a white sand bottom. Brush lines the banks of much of the river except around the various bends that are formed by the white sand and smooth pebble beaches. The water level does vary but on the low end it is still moving at a swift 2mph. Keep an eye on the weather, river level, and temperature prior to the trip. As the Coldwater Creek flows from the north, Alabama’s rainfall could affect the level on the river.  As for the temperature, lets just say this river lives up to its name.

Moonlight Zip Line

November 10th, 2010

Are you looking for adventure? Have you already tried the zip line canopy tour? If so, how would you like to zip under the full moon? That’s right! On Saturday, November, 20th we will zip some truly adventurous souls on the Soaring Stream zip line over Coldwater Creek by the light of moon. We equip the zippers with glow sticks and our guides utilize safety lights, but otherwise the full moon was the only illumination of their path and the reflection off Coldwater is breathtaking. Believe me, you haven’t really zipped until you’ve zipped in the dark!

The Soaring Stream zip line adventure starts after a 1/3 mile hike through a forested pine plantation. After climbing a 60 foot tower you will marvel at the views overlooking thousands of acres of forest lands. You can observe hawks and other birds soaring around you. Your 1st flight takes you beside a 100 year old pine tree overlooking Bass Brink and Coldwater Creek. From there you travel a series of zip lines and a sky bridge with magnificent views of Coldwater Creek. Then from high above Stumpy Alley Beach you will soar 700 feet over Coldwater Creek to land on a low platform. The last climb is on the tallest spiral staircase made from wood harvested in Florida. This 60 foot tower is the last zip line platform and provides the start for your longest zip adventure of the day. You will fly 900 feet over Coldwater Creek dipping down and almost touching the water.

We are working hard to get Zip Adventures ready for the spring!  Most of the poles for the first leg of the tour are in place and they will start putting the actual zip lines up tomorrow! If you have never been on a canopy zip tour, you need to come out and zip with us this year!  It is a great way to combine eco adventure with the rush of flying through the air on a zip line!  The canopy zip includes many zips, several sky bridges and several tree top platforns to view wildlife and eco systems from.  I’ll keep you posted on our progress.
