Adventure’s
Unlimited began with two
canoes on top of a 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass, then expanded
to thirty canoes and a 1972 GMC three quarter ton pickup
(affectionately referred to as “Old Blue”). The Blackwater
River State Park was the main point of debarkation and phones
were answered from the Sanborn family residence in
Bagdad, Florida.
In 1978, the original Tomahawk Landing was purchased on the
Santa Rosa County courthouse steps. It started out as one
building, and over the years developed into a complete lodging
and water recreation resort. By 1982, Adventure’s Unlimited
began adding rustic
cabins
(“Azalea” and “Cedar”), and then
our first fireplace cabins soon followed (“Egret” and “Foxden”).
Canoeing and
tubing
proved to be very popular, and customers began staying in the
developing campgrounds and cabins. In the early 1990’s, the
new “Creekside Kitchen” was built which brought much success
with
catering
hayrides and group retreats.
In
1993, “Granny Peaden’s”, a cracker-style cabin, was moved to
Adventure’s Unlimited’s Wilderness Resort on Coldwater Creek. It
was restored and furnished with period pieces and has become one
of the most popular cabins (seen below). In summer of 1994, a 1940’s State of
Florida
Ranger
cabin and a two-story house (originally owned by
Bagdad
Land and Lumber Company) were moved to the Resort. Both
dwellings have been restored and have had fireplaces added to
them.
Also
in the summer of 1994, the Adventure’s Unlimited high
and low ropes
Challenge Course
was completed. Since then, Adventure’s Unlimited
has had numerous groups benefit from these unique
sets of problem solving elements. The challenge course
has grown to be one of the premiere challenge courses
in the South East. In 2005 AU added the “Pirate's
Tower”, a set of three climbing elements
ultimately leading to a 60’ high super zip line.
In
the fall of ’94, several schools in the Santa Rosa County school
system were among the first groups to enjoy the “Adventure
Hike”. School children were given a basic hands-on science
lesson, and taken on a
nature hike. Hopefully this program will
grow and benefit us all by exposing new generations to the
beauty in nature and helping them learn to protect and
appreciate it.
These
programs and activities join a fleet of approximately
250 canoes, 90 kayaks, 500+ tubes, and 4 rafts for
“on
water” enjoyment. Adventure’s Unlimited
also has approximately 100 acres on its Wilderness
Resort location with 21
cabins, the
Schoolhouse
Inn, campgrounds for groups and
individuals, a catering facility, a playground, nature
trails, sports fields, and sports equipment. There
is also a franchise location on the Perdido River.
In
the fall of ’96, renovation on the old Fidelis
Schoolhouse
began. In the summer of ’97 it was completed and became our
School House Inn. It has 8 rooms, each themed after an American
author. Four have gas fireplaces.
In
1997, renovation was started an old trailer located on Coldwater
Creek. The new riverfront cabin,
Riverside I, was completed in
1998. This cabin became a favorite among guests, and in the
summer of 2002 another riverfront cabin was added to Adventure’s
Unlimited ----
Riverside II.
These two-bedroom cabins are located side
by side, with screened-in porches overlooking the rippling
creek.
Another recent addition to Adventure’s Unlimited is the
“Recreation Barn”, designed specifically for group retreats, the
Recreation Barn offers a meeting room, as well as a gymnasium
complete with a basketball court and ping-pong tables.
Adventure’s Unlimited continues to expand to meet the needs of
all of our guests – families,
honeymooners, churches,
schools,
Scout
Troops,
corporate
groups, and many more! If there is anything Adventure’s
Unlimited can do to meet your specific requests, please let us
know! Your input is essential to the growth and development of
Adventure’s Unlimited Outdoor Center, and has made this resort
what it is today.
